cheap price = cheap design

I have run into the situation, as almost all designers have, of a potential client saying my quote was, "outside of our budget." Why is that? I have tried to put myself in my client's shoes and understand why they hesitate or do not budge on price with designers but are willing to do so in other areas of their life or company.

Since graphic design is not a tangible thing, something you can put your mitts on, something you can smell or taste, clients are always thinking they can get a better deal. I admit, I do the same with car repair since I know nothing about it I think the mechanic is stiffing me with a crazy high price. But, price is only one way to measure value. Why not factor in the designers/mechanics ability to problem solve, turnaround time, and quality of work? After all, there are a lot of sites that you can upload what you need and have designers bid and design for you for almost nothing. Why not go that route? Why go to a designer directly and have them charge much more? Well, just like in any else, in graphic design you get what you pay for. I could pay for a cheap car repair but if 3 weeks later it breaks again, was it really a good deal? Paying $30 for a custom flyer is really not a great deal if the printer can't print it and if it is not designed in a way that clearly conveys your message and brand. Just think about paying a tattoo artist $50 for a full back tattoo, um I think not. Sounds too good to be true and it is.

The Irish Water Company is learning that lesson.

Here is the thing, you know good design when you see it...sort of. Good design should do it's job so well you don't realize it is doing anything. Good design should always follow function. The purpose of design is to help tell the story and communicate, not to make things pretty. Designers, what you do is important. Stop participating in these micro job sites and having people pay you bargain bin prices for your work.

I found a great article by Addison Duvall, "Why Don’t People Want To Pay For Good Design?" It is worth the read and you and I are worth more than clearance mark down prices.

get out & Vote

I know you have heard it a million times to vote so I am doing my part to make it one million and one. Make time to vote today! No matter your choice of candidate it is very important to let your voice be heard on a national and more importantly a local level. Your community needs you to pick the best person for the seats in your county, city, and state.

AIGA did a "Get Out the Vote" campaign and asked it members to submit thier nonpartisan posters and videos to get people to vote.

Here are a few of my favorites.

kerning, the game

Are you up to the challenge? Are you design nerd enough to think this is fun? If you are like me and answered yes to both questions then you are in the right place.

"Your mission is simple: achieve pleasant and readable text by distributing the space between letters. Typographers call this activity kerning. Your solution will be compared to typographer's solution, and you will be given a score depending on how close you nailed it. Good luck!"

Now get to Kerning!

What was your score? :)

art of the menu

Let's face it, every restaurant menu you set your eyes on you critique it and think of all the ways you would have done it different. The type is too big, the color is all wrong, or it is just overall horrible and breaks your designer heart. If this is you, then you will enjoy "Art of the Menu," a site dedicated to showcasing very well designed menus. It makes my mouth water just looking through all the delicious choices.

If you have designed a beautiful menu and would like it shared just send it to Art of the Menu. I am sure since this site has just been baked they will gladly post your work of art. Here's how to send.

real beauty is inside the bible

"Eye candy" and "design" don't naturally come mind in a word association game around the bible. But, times have changed and there is no need to read a plain bible anymore. There are many great options out now of beautifully designed bibles. Just take a trip to your local Christian book store and see for yourself.

Hmm, I think I need a new bible after looking at a few cool ones. Here are a two of my favorites.

kickstarter

You may have the question in your head "Well, what do I get out of this?" Good question, depending on the level of backing you are in you will get to not only see and experience the project from start to finish, but you may get the first items off the assembly line. It is really up to the person or people running the project.

So, follow me and help kick start some awesome creative projects that could change the world. Kickstarter

straightforward printing techniques & terms

You ever talk to someone wanting to get something printed an you go right into questions like "Do you want a custom print with die-cuts or foil stamping?" only to find out they have no clue what you are saying?

Did you answer yes?

Did you answer yes again?

Anyhoo, here is a great link to share or pull up on your phone in the moment to get them on the same page. It can also help with designers not being sure of how to go about setting up a file correctly for the printer if you are wanting these custom techniques.

In search of the designers from my previous post I stumbled on "Kiss My Black Ad's." It is a blog centered around, well, in the blog's own words "...features work for, by & of multicultural people. Which really means any & everybody doesn't it? The purpose of the blog is to learn, teach, as well as inspire marketers & creatives."

I humbled and honored to be interviewed for Kiss My Black Ad's as a bright young designer. Follow me to read the interview.
